International org bats for trial-by-jury RP

by Ben Moses Ebreo

Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya (February 23) -- An international organization has launched a signature campaign inorder to push for the adoption of the trial-by?jury system in Philippine courts.

The signatures which will be gathered shall be submitted to congress to solicit support and approval for its adoption in the judicial system in the country, said Amy Balliao, director of the Philippine Jury Campaign International (PJCI).

Trial-by-jury system is a judicial process of group of common persons to decide on cases lodged before the court. It is also serves as a way for people empowerment on the administration of justice which promotes just and right decisions.

"We are doing this do orient people and change their attitudes to become politically matured and on respect for the sanctity of our votes and rebuild our respect and trust for the rule of law," Balliao in a press conference told reporters at the FTM Food Plaza here.

According to Balliao, the trial-by-jury system which is also adopted by other countries in the globe covers serious crimes punishable by six months imprisonment and above.

She also expressed optimism that the system which started its advocacy campaign in 2004 will be adopted through snowballing of signatures from different provinces including the support of political leaders inorder to push for a people?s initiative. (PIA NVizcaya) [top]
