LGUs to prevent posting of unlawful campaign materials

Cagayan de Oro City (23 February) -- The Commission on Elections has deputized the local government units (LGU) to prevent, remove, destroy, confiscate or tear down any prohibited propaganda materials without partiality.
Lawyer Renato A. Magbutay, Regional Elections Director of region 10, said these materials include posters, streamers, stickers or paintings on walls and other materials showing the picture, image or name of a person or a candidate, made or done in violation of election laws prior to the campaign period.
Also included are all advertisements on print, in radio or television showing the image or mentioning the name of the candidate which shall be removed by the said candidate and radio station, print media or television station within three (3) days after the effectivity of these implementing rules and the start of the campaign period.
Otherwise, the candidate and said radio station, print media or television station shall be presumed to have committed the pertinent election offense during said campaign period for national candidates or for local candidates as he case may be, Magbutay said.
Meanwhile, a task force to tear down and remove all unlawful election materials is created by the Comelec composed of the Election Officer as Chairperson, the Station Commander / Chief of Police of the Philippine National Police (PNP) as Vice Chairperson and a third member belonging to any of the deputized agencies of the Comelec.
Among the duties and functions of the said task force are the following: To tear down and remove campaign propaganda materials posted in public places outside the common poster areas.
To tear down and remove illegal campaign materials wherever posted or displayed and watch out / arrest persons caught in the act of posting or distributing said unlawful election paraphernalia and to make a report of said activities done by them. (PIA 10) [top]
