Northern Mindanao students shine anew in global science competition

Cagayan de Oro City (23 February) -- Students from the region have excelled in international science and mathematics competition and were conferred the Youth Excellence in Science (YES) Awards.

The 10 YES awardees are the following: Franz Patrick Villamor of City Central School, Cagayan de Oro City, for winning a bronze medal during the 5th International Mathematics Competition in Singapore; Paul Carlo Diamond Salise of City Central School, Cagayan de Oro City, for winning a bronze medal and a silver for his team, during the 2009 Wizards at Mathematics International Competition held in Lucknow, India, and another bronze medal during the 6th International Mathematics and Science Olympiad for Primary School held in Jakarta, Indonesia;

Joseph Jireh Eguia of Corpus Christi High School, Cagayan de Oro City, for winning a bronze medal during the 5th International Mathematics Competition in Singapore;

Royce Dy of Kong Hua School, Cagayan de Oro City, for winning a bronze medal during the 2009 China Primary Math Olympiad held in Tianjin, China;

Annamitz Rapliza of Lanao Chung Hua School, for winning a bronze medal during the 5th International Mathematics Competition in Singapore;

Gail Denise Destura of La Salle Academy, Iligan City, for winning a bronze medal during the 2009 China Primary Math Olympiad held in Tianjin, China;

Jose Agerico Bacal II of Rosevale School, Cagayan de Oro City, for winning a silver medal during the 5th International Mathematics Competition in Singapore and a Bronze medal for Puzzle, along with a team merit award during the 2009 Philippine International Mathematics Competition;

Katrine Lorenzana Saniel of St. Mary's School, Cagayan de Oro City, for winning a bronze medal during the 2009 China Junior High School Math Olympiad held in Tianjin, China;

Ross Jervin Lorenz B. Ruiz of Philippine Science High School-Central Mindanao Campus, Baloi, Lanao del Norte, for winning a bronze medal during the 2009 China Junior High School Math Olympiad held in Tianjin, China; and

Jayhan Regner of Xavier University, for winning a bronze medal during the 5th International Mathematics Competition in Singapore.

The YES awardees are to receive their YES medals in an awarding ceremony, the date of which is still to be announced.

The YES awards is a yearly recognition being conferred by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) to young achievers in international science and mathematics competitions. It aims to motivate and inspire the youth to strive for excellence in the field of science and mathematics. (DOST 10) [top]
