Lupon: Sailing through rough waters with fastcraft

By Neela G. Duallo

Lupon, Davao Oriental (24 February) -- The municipality of Lupon has again recorded history as it inaugurated its "Fast Craft", a sea ferry, now sailing through the ravenous waves of Lupon, passing through the captivating Cape of San Agustin in Gov. Generoso before reaching its final destination in Davao City.

As the people of Lupon have been waiting to be on board the 120-seat capacity ferry with the seats of a commercial airplane, everything was worth the wait.

"This is the realization of your dream. The Fast Craft will absolutely and definitely open more doors in tourism and investment opportunities, for Lupon and the Province as well. And as such, this will mean a sprouting economy for Lupon. But we have to take care of what we have now to sustain the project," Governor Malanyaon said.

The project could not have been possible without the initiative and resourcefulness of Fast Craft owner Mr. Dante Capalo.

Capalo constructed a "floating wharf", for the dockage of the Fast Craft, after the wooden wharf in Lupon intended to be home for the ferry was destroyed due to the big waves experienced last year as remnants of a weather disturbance.

Congresswoman Thelma Almario of the second district of the Province She was also happy that the project has come to its finality.

Mayor Domingo Lim was so elated with the history unveiled for Lupon.

"I would like to thank all those who became an enormous part in this endeavor. I am optimistic that this will bring us to greater heights, as this will absolutely be a boost to our tourism promotion efforts," he said.

The Fast Craft had its maiden voyage on February 19, 2010. It sails to Davao three times daily, starting at 9:30 in the morning, 1:30 and 5:30 in the afternoon.

Fast Craft travel cuts the travel time to half the regular travel time by land. The 9:30 morning schedule arrives Davao at 10:45.

Philippine Coast Guard Mati Station Commander Lt. Ramil Palabrica considered that Fast Craft operation as a welcome development, not only for Lupon, but to the entirety of Davao Oriental.

"We will be very glad attending to our duties, particularly checking on the compliance to load requirement before the ferry sails. We are happy to be part of this history for the Province," he stressed.

Mayor Rodrigo Duterte also graced the inauguration, with some media friends from Davao.

The Fast Craft operation could not have been possible without the initiative of owner Mr. Dante Capalo who constructed a "floating wharf' for dockage of the sea ferry.

Last year, the wooden wharf in Lupon was damaged by strong winds brought about by a weather disturbance.

Lupon, becoming a fast progressing municipality in the province of Davao Oriental, is said to have derived its name from the native word "naluponan" meaning, a body of land accumulated at the mouth of a river resulting from years of continued accretion". The settlers shortened the word "naluponan" into what is called now as "Lupon". (Mati, Dvo. Or.) [top]
