Popcom conducts reproductive halth seminars for adolescents

Maasin City, Southern Leyte (24 February) -- The Population Commission (POPCOM) has continuously conducted the Adolescent Reproductive Health seminars and workshops to teen-agers who are vulnerable to teenage pregnancy, pre-mature sex, early marriage and the like, POPCOM Provincial Officer Velma Kangleon reported in a phone interview this morning.
There were at least 111 High School graduating students from the Sto. Nino Academy at the municipality of Malitbog who attended the ARH program seminar workshop conducted February 17-18, 2010. The students were taught on the basic knowledge and skills concerning adolescents and awareness of reproductive health program, Kangleon disclosed.
"Proper information dissemination is an important role to teach and equip teenagers with the principles and appropriate life skills of adolescents," Kangleon noted. The move is one of their campaigns for the teens not to go into early marriage or teenage pregnancy.
While, mostly, teenagers don?t get correct advice because of the lack of information form elders, she added.
In coordination with the local health personnel at the Salvacion Oppus Yniguez Memorial Provincial Hospital (SOYMPH), POPCOM, the lead agency had already conducted Adolescent Reproductive Health Program seminars to the Inter-Local Health Zones of Sogod area, Pacific Area, Panaon Area and in Maasin City.
The seminar workshops focuses on the following topics: Overview and background of sexually transmitted diseases (STD); Human Development and Fertilization Awareness; Anti Smoking; Family Morale and Spiritual Values; Drug Abuse; Responsible Me ? Teenage Pregnancy, among the few.
Some Resource speakers for the POPCOM-funded activity include Vicky Generan, Provincial Supervising Midwife, Dr. Julius Duarte, Alma Malazarte, and Ms. Kangleon, all from the SOYMPH. (PIA-soleyte) [top]
