One Barangay? One Product up soon in Zamboanga del Norte

Zamboanga City (26 February) -- While most of the Local Government Units (LGUs) in the country have adopted the One-Town One-Product approach in promoting locally produced commodities, the people of Siocon, Zamboanga del Norte are planning to start their One Barangay ? One Product or OBOP.

Self Employment Assistance ?Kaunlaran (SEA-K) Coordinator Gloria Sisay said the plan is an offshoot of the employment assistance given the community.

Sissay emphasized that through the program the people were able to visualize broader prospective on their own initiative to further augment or improve their qualities of life.

The women group of Siocon initially plans to go on balut and salted egg production and meat processing. However, Sissay informed that the group has to undergo training on the field of business they had planned to invest.

Feasibility study is now on-going for the project including scheduled training for the members of the group. Sustainability of the proposed project should be included in the study in order to have a good if not excellent end result that would serve as model project in the area, Sissay explained.

Training assistance would provided by project implementing agencies that include the Department of Agriculture (DA), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Food Nutrition and Research Institute (FNRI) and other partner line agencies and Non-Government Organizations (NGOs).

Other towns in the coastal areas of Zamboanga del Norte are also planning to engage in dried fish production wherein raw materials are greatly available in the community, Sissay added. (fnm/PIA-Zamboanga City) [top]
