PGMA's irrigation projects boost agri production in the north

Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya (March 4) -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's irrigation projects implemented under the North Luzon Agri-business Quadrangle (NLAQ) has raised agricultural production in northern Luzon, NLAQ report bared.
In March last year, President Arroyo ordered the release of P2 billion for the repairs, rehabilitation and restoration of neglected irrigation systems in NLAQ provinces to increase their productivity and boost national food security.
This involves the construction of three major irrigation systems such as the P7.46 billion Casecnan Multi-Purpose Irrigation and Power Project in Nueva Vizcaya, the P2.46 billion Banaoang Pump Irrigation Project in Bantay, Ilocos Sur and the P7.46 billion Agno River Integrated Irrigation Project in Pangasinan.
Since 2001, a total of 54,506 hectares of farmlands in the region were provided with communal irrigation systems that also resulted in the rehabilitation of 669,916 hectares of farmlands.
These projects, the report added increased rice production in the NLAQ areas by 39 percent or from 5.21 metric tons in 2000 to 7.23 metric tons in 2008. (PIA NVizcaya) [top]
