Habitat announces blitz build 10 houses for poor families

By Jennifer Catan-Tilos

Dumaguete City (5 March) -- Habitat for Humanity intends to expand and build houses also for the poor families in some neighboring municipalities as Dumaguete City has already eight housing sites with over 830 homes built up for 20 years now.

Habitat for Humanity board member Engr. Greg Uymatiao said while a blitz build for 10 additional houses will take place on March 6 to 12, 2010 at Barangay Candau-ay, Dumaguete City, "we also encourage private individuals or local government units in Metro Dumaguete to offer some vacant residential lots for some poor resident-families to avail a decent house build through the Habitat."

To continue its mission of providing low-cost housing to Dumaguete families in need, the Habitat for Humanity is hosting a major volunteer house blitz for 10 families while international volunteers will join with local volunteers to build new homes in just seven days.

Ten years ago, to recall former US President Jimmy Carter came to lead more 500 international and local volunteers in building Habitat houses of which this forthcoming event volunteers from Japan, Australia, USA and around the globe to provide much needed manual labor to this worthy cause, Engr. Uymatiao said.

However, the Habitat still needs local volunteers, sponsors and support in cash or in kind to use throughout the build and ensure its house building and community programs are sustainable for the future.

For now, the Habitat is now embarking on the ambitious plan of having 2000 homes by 2020 of which this March blitz build is the first of a number of events to happen over the next 10 years to reach the goal.

Dumaguete City Habitat for Humanity Inc. is a non-stock, non-profit organization provides the opportunity for low income families to own decent affordable house which the families themselves help build with the assistance of local and international partners.

The house is then repaid by the home partner-family for 15-20 years with no interest. (PIA/JCT) [top]
