Ifugao irrigation project eases effects of El Nino

Lamut, Ifugao (6 March) -- While the country is suffering from the effects of the El Nino Phenomenon, fisherfolks here are lucky that the multi-million Hapid Irrigation Project still providing enough supply of water to the farms and fishponds here.
Ms. Neriza Danao, Aquaculturist II of the Provincial Agriculture Office here said that the fisherfolks are thankful to the government for the said macro project which is saving them from the onslaught of the dry spell.
Danao said that said irrigation which was constructed under the administration of former Governor Ildefonso Dulinayan boosted the economy here. With a total of 100 hectares of fishponds, Lamut is considered the tilapia producing municipality here next to Alfonso Lista.
With the reported fish kill in Magat Dam, Danao said that Lamut is now the source of fish not only in the province but also in the adjoining provinces of Mt. Province and Nueva Vizcaya.
Lamut also houses the provincial hatchery here where Farmer Field School (FFS) is being conducted. "Our office or other concerned agencies are also using the said hatchery to teach the fisherfolks technologies to improve their output," Danao said.
Danao disclosed that there are 400 fisherfolks here and are producing 5-6tons of tilapia per hectare. Ifugao is the number one in the Cordillera in fish production and the fourth in the entire country. (PIA-Ifugao) [top]
