BCYA supports condom distribution

Baguio City (6 March) -- A non government organization is all out for the distribution of condoms in the city.
Baguio Center for Young Adults head Marlene de Castro said that the condom distribution started by the Department of Health in the National Capital Region is supported by their group.
According to de Castro, there is an increasing number of Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD), HIV and AIDS cases and the only intervention we can do is the distribution of condoms to adults and the young adults.
But she stressed that there must be a massive information campaign on the proper and responsible use of condoms and why the use of such protection. The teen agers or young adults should have a sense of responsibility before the distribution and the use of condoms, De Castro said.
Young adults in the city are very much sexually active as shown by survey reports of the BCYA. The promiscuous sexual attitude of these young adults is a factor in the increasing STD cases in the city.
Sexually active young men and women and having multiple partners lead to HIV and AIDS, said de Castro. Teen age pregnancy is also increasing as more young adults engage in premarital sex without any protection.
De Castro noted that BCYA has been conducting sex education to young adults but this is not enough. The community should work hand in hand together with the government to address problems on STD, AIDS and teenage pregnancies.
BCYA is also conducting forums on empowering young women to say no to premarital sex as it is always being used to prove love to their partners not knowing the consequences. (PIA) [top]
