San Fernando City, La Union (10 March) -- Women deserves the right to be respected and protected from all forms of human violence and abuses because they play vital role in nation building and development, an officer of the Region 1 Advocates for Gender Equality (RAGE) said during a one-hour PIA ‘Ammuentayo’ radio program over DZNL Aksyon Radyo, this city recently.
Civil Service Commission Personnel Specialist Marichu Cuison, an officer of the RAGE highlighted the gist of the Magna Carta for Women, a comprehensive women’s human rights law that serves as the national translation of the United Nation’s Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), the International Bill of Rights for Women.
"The passage of the Magna Carta for Women had enhanced empowerment of women most especially those who are victims of domestic violence and other forms of abuses," Cuison added.
She further stressed the different acts committed against women, either intentionally or unintentionally, that can be categorized to be an abuse against women which includes saying unsolicited malicious/vulgar words/statements, malicious texting, malicious whistling, giving malicious looks on women, aside from physical violence and others.
"It is to be noted that an act will be considered an abuse if the concerned individual (woman/women) considers it as such and complain is presented, otherwise, it is not," Cuison said.
On the other hand, broadcaster Apple Concha of DZNL Aksyon Radyo raised the issue on how about addressing violence against men since it’s a reality that there are also abuses of women to men.
Cuison answered that in so far as RAGE is concerned, advocacy on gender equality does not only confined with the protection of women but both sexes, meaning, while empowering the women, the men are enjoined to participate in all gender and development activities for them to interact with the women sector.
Nonetheless, the Commission on Human Rights, being the lead agency, in terms of protection of rights is concerned, can be tapped in times of felt abuses, along with other concerned agencies and institutions. (PIA Region 1/La Union) [top]
