Women's month kick-off celebration in Ilocos starts

Vigan City (10 March) -- The local government of Vigan City, headed by Mayor Eva Marie Singson-Medina formally opened last Tuesday (March 2, 2010) the activities highlighting this year's womenís month celebration here.

"Before the issuance of laws instituting the celebration of March as women's month, we had been celebrating this event yearly to recognize the role of my fellow women for the development of the city," Mayor Medina said.

"We, women had also form part the greater majority of the society for nation building; thus, women in Vigan are the partners for making Vigan to what she is now," she added.

According to Medina, this year's women celebration in the city is very different from the past years as she launched the "search for the Biguena Achiever," where nomination for awardees started March 2 and will end on September 30, this year.

The awarding ceremonies for the winner will be on January 2011 during the annual city fiesta.

To signify the formal kick-off activities for the celebration; a thanksgiving mass was held at Vigan Culture and Trade Center (VCTC) followed by the launching of the search for the Biguena Achiever and the cutting of the ribbon for the opening of the 4-day Womenís Products Trade Fair participated in by the existing 14 cityís womenís organizations at the back of the city hall.

Among the significant activities of the celebration in Vigan are as follows: free medical/dental services sponsored by Mercury Drug (March 1); film showing of gender sensitive movies (March 2,4,5); symposium on sexual harassment and other laws related on women (March 3); gender advocacy parade with healthy lifestyle lecture and consultation and voterís education lecture (March 8); womenís advocacy over the TV and radio (March 8- 14); women take-over city government day (March 15); Day Care Center graduation mass and recognition days (March 15, 17-19); physical fitness, extra challenge and community picnic (March 20); livelihood training (March 25-30); gratitude day for partners of women (March 28) and gift-giving to indigent solo parents and elderlies living alone.

"On the 28th of March, it will be a day of thanksgiving for our partners or husbands by doing activities which shows our love to them like cooking their favorite food and others," Mayor Medina said. (PIA Ilocos Sur) [top]
