Feature: New road fitting tribute to illustrious Ilonggo
Iloilo City (15 March) -- The newly constructed road along the Iloilo River from Carpenter Bridge in Molo district to Lapaz district of this city has been named in honor of an illustrious Ilonggo- Efrain B. Trenas.
Trenas' sons including Mayor Jerry Trenas together with guest of honor Dr. Rogelio Florete, Chairman of the Florete Group of Companies, led in the unveiling of the marker on Saturday, March 13, 2010.
"To name this road as the Efrain B. Trenas Boulevard is a fitting tribute to a man whose love for country made it possible for our generation and for future generation cherish the freedom we enjoy today," said Florete in his keynote speech.
Florete noted Trenas' love for his country and dedication to freedom and democracy when he fought against the Japanese invaders and became a prisoner of war as a young soldier during the second world war and when he risked his life and that of his family to fight the dictatorship together with other patriots of that time.
Trenas was also a lawyer, a law professor and elected Commissioner of the 1987 Constitutional Convention.
"In sum it maybe a belated but well deserved tribute to an illustrious Ilonggo, a genuine gesture of gratitude and pride that all Ilonggos must share not only today but for generations to come," added Florete in his speech in a ceremony attended by family and relatives of Trenas, city officials, supporters and guests.
Regulation Ordinance No. 2009-285 passed by the Iloilo Sangguniang Panlunsod and enacted on July 22, 2009 but took effect March 11, 2010 officially named the new road as Efrain B. Trenas Boulevard. (PIA) [top]
