PGMA to address SNAMMM on Interfaith Dialogue and Cooperation Wednesday
Manila, March 16 (PNA) -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will address on Wednesday the
Special Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Ministerial Meeting on Interfaith Dialogue and Cooperation for Peace and Development on Wednesday being held at the Philippine International Convention Center.
In the meeting being attended by representatives of the 118 NAM member countries, the President is expected to reiterate the Philippines' unwavering commitment in promoting lasting peace towards sustainable development.
As the leading voice of developing countries, the Chief Executive has been at the forefront in combating domestic and regional terrorism, promoting interfaith dialogue to attain lasting peace, including stronger cooperation against poverty to advance peace and development in the region.
The President earlier pointed out that issues such as the financial crisis, climate change, nuclear non-proliferation and other pressing global concerns can be effectively addressed through "international solidarity that can be effectively developed through dialogue amongst peoples, civilizations and religions."
Since its acceptance to NAM in 1992, the Philippines has always supported its various meeting, notably the NAM summit which is held every three years.
At the 13th NAM Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2003, the President cited the NAM's continuing revitalization in the light of challenges of the new century.
At the 14th NAM Summit in Havana in September 2006, the President, through former House Speaker Jose de Venecia, conveyed to the meeting the desire of the Philippines to host a Special Ministerial Meeting on Interfaith Dialogue as the country's contribution to promoting peace and development.
At the 15th NAM Summit in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt in July 2009, the President, in her Asian Group Statement, highlighted the need to cooperate on interfaith dialogue for peace and development, climate change, migration and development, nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament and global financial reform.
