Commentary: Heed PGMA's call to conserve water

Tacloban City (March 22) -- As the whole world celebrates World Water Day, as many parts of the country are being threatened by El Nino and as the summer season comes, the government calls on the public to conserve water and to keep water clean in order to have a healthy world.

The government's call is to the public to conserve water in order to mitigate the water crisis brought about by the El Nino phenomenon which is expected to last until June of this year.

Among the ways whereby the public will be able to conserve water is seeing to it that faucets are not leaking. Make sure that the faucet is properly closed when not in use. It is estimated that 200 liters of water per five minutes are wasted when faucets are not properly closed.

Another way of conserving water is by informing proper authorities on illegal connections of water or leaking pipes.

Wash clothes in bulk and use only enough water and soap. Don't allow water to overflow while washing.

Recycle water. Water used in washing maybe used for comfort rooms and in cleaning cars.

When taking a bath, one can conserve water by using the pail instead of using the shower. Close the faucet while shampooing and soaping the body and rinse using a dipper. An open shower consumes from 9 to 45 liters of water per minute.

When brushing the teeth, use a glass of water instead of making the water flow while tooth-brushing. This will conserve about 80% of the usual use of water.

Don's wash the car everyday. Use clean washcloth and water in the pail to clean the car. This will conserve 18 liters of water per minute.

Only give water to hotel and restaurant customers when requested. When they do, save the leftovers to be used in watering the plants.

Remove the morsels from the plates before washing. Use basin in washing the dishes to conserve water and soap.

Washing the plants before sunrise and at sundown will lessen water loss due to evaporation.

Collect rain water which may be used for everyday cleaning of the house, watering the plants and many others.

For buildings which are not used in the evening, the gate valve must be closed and opened again only in the morning.

Students, employees and housemates must be taught on how they could conserve water. This may be included in the subjects in school. (PIA 8) [top]
