Malaybalay City, Bukidnon (22 March) -- Bukidnon's food production is moderately affected by the onslaught of El Niņo, compared to the effects of drought in some neighboring provinces, according to the Provincial Agriculturist.
Provincial Agriculture Officer Engr. Alson Quimba said, while some provinces are already in an alarming level, Bukidnon still hits the harvest target of 4.2 to 3.5 metric tons per hectare in irrigated rice land.
Based on the data released by the Provincial Agriculture Office, Bukidnon has a total land area of 1,049,859 hectares with 35 percent or 371,507 hectares devoted to agriculture planted with rice, corn, banana, pineapple, sugarcane, rubber and some high value commercial crops.
Quimba said cornfield damage reaches only almost 600 hectares out of 100,000 hectares of cornland.
Bukidnon remains a top food-producing province. It still enjoys the distinction of being one of the largest rice-producing areas in the country. It has a rice sufficiency level of one hundred twenty percent (120%), thus complementing the rice needs of other provinces of the excess rice. (PIA-Bukidnon) [top]
