Earth Hour campaign is on in Eastern Visayas

Catbalogan City (March 25) -- Earth Hour campaign has started in Eastern Visayas!

Yesterday, at the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Kapihan dubbed as'Harampang,' the Junior Chamber International (JCI) a youth organization solicited the commitment of other allies through a signing of a Memorandum of Agreement(MOA) in support of Earth Hour.

The MOA mentioned that EARTH HOUR means 'turning the lights out' from 8:30 to 9:30 PM on the last Saturday of March which falls on Saturday, the 27th.

Organizations, agencies that signed the MOA included the Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center, PNP, PIA, Alpha Phi Omega, DENR, Triskelion Alumni Organization, Leyte Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Zonta International Clean Healthy Air N Green environment (CHANGE) Foundation, Junior Jaycees of Tacloban City and other chapters of JCI from Tanauan, Tacloban City and Candahug Liberation Inc., which spearheaded the MOA signing.

By participating in the Earth Hour, people are made aware that it is a call to action for every individual, every business and every community throughout the world to stand up, take action, take responsibility, to get involved and lead the way towards a sustainable future.

Earth Hour uses the simple action of turning off lights for an hour to deliver a powerful message on the need for climate change solutions. This simple act has captured the hearts and minds of people all over the world, becoming a worldwide phenomenon in 2008 and 2009 ? where the Philippines placed first globally in terms of town and city participation.

To recall, more than 15 million Filipinos in 650 major towns and cities in the country participated in the Earth Hour in 2009.

According to World Wildlife Fund (WWF) globally, 807 towns and cities in 82 countries all over the world signed up for Earth Hour.

In Tacloban City, E Visayas Regional Capital, organizers will also hold "Walk for a Cause and or Bicycle Ride" to start at the Tacloban Astrodome and to culminate an the RTR Plaza where a free concert awaits the marchers and riders for a cause.

The JCI and other agencies called on the public not only to dramatize their sentiments vs global warming but to make little sacrifices to heal Mother Earth! (PIA-Samar) [top]
