KFR group, lawless armed group leader killed in Basilan
Isabela City, Basilan (25 March) -- In the early morning of March 20, 2010, thirty (30) fully armed lawless elements harassed the temporary Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU) detachment located in Sitio Tilling, Barangay Guiong, Sumisip, Basilan Province.
The ensuing fire fight with the group lasted for two (2) hours and resulted to the death of Abugao Bayali, a notorious Kidnapped for Ransom Group (KFRG) leader and a sub-commander of Lawless MILF Group operating in Sumisip and Maluso municipalities of Basilan.
The Special Operations Platoon of MBLT-7 and 61st Force Reconnaissance Company under Major Armel S Tolato, CO of MBLT-7 were able to reinforce the said CAFGU Unit and engaged the retreating enemy bringing along with them the bodies of commander Abugao and one (1) of his unidentified follower.
CAA Monir Asarul, cousin of Mayor of Sumisip and CAA Ahamad Kabung, brother of Sumisip Municipal Chief Security Officer who gallantry stood their ground in repulsing the lawless group died during the fire fight. While Cpl Jerson P Castillon PN(M) and CVO Hodan Asarul who were hit on their knees and buttocks respectively were immediately brought by air evacuation in Camp Navarro General Hospital , Calarian, Zamboanga City for further medical treatment.
Abugao Bayali's group was responsible for the kidnapping of Leah Lapping Patris on 03 February 2009 and in the ambush of a PNP Mobile Group based in Maluso which resulted to the death of Police Inspector Rayman Jannatul and seven other Policemen at Brgy Libug, Sumisip, Basilan on 28 June 2009.
His group was also heavily engaged in extortion activities among the residents of Sumisip and have participated in the kidnapping of two Chinese nationals from Hitech Wood Craft Corporation at Sitio Botong, Brgy Townsite, Maluso, Basilan on 09 November 2009 and the massacre of civilians at Brgy Tubigan, Maluso, Basilan on 01 March 2010.
With the neutralization of Abugao and his men, Brigadier General Eugenio N Clemen AFP, Commander 1st Marine Brigade declared that the Marines will continue to hunt down bandits and other terrorist groups through intensified operations.
He added that he has focused more support to the operating units in the field against the Al Harakatul Al Islamiya now commonly known as the Abu Sayyaf Group and other terrorist/threat groups operating in the province of Basilan. (1MBde/PIA9-BST) [top]
