Anti-Hunger Task Force outlines tips for coping with El Nino

Iloilo City (29 March) -- The Accelerated Hunger Mitigation Program (AHMP) Task Force has directed the National Nutrition Council (NNC) to redirect its nutritional campaign to help the people cope with El Nino.

NNC Regional Coordinator Nona Tad-y said in a briefing with members of the Population, Health and Nutrition sub-committee of the Regional Development Council (RDC),that the effects of El Nino are exacting heavy toll on the ability of families to provide for its members good nutritional stuffs.

She said NNC and the DA are campaigning for the dissemination of low-cost menu items the families can prepare, use of rice substitutes like corn, cassava, and other root crops, use of brown sugar as better alternative to refined sugar, promotion of breastfeeding as income-saving intervention and promotion and support for Tindahan Natin and Bigasan ng Bayan for availability of cheaper commodities especially for the poor.

Tad-y said the campaign should be intensified and sustained until August 2010 to bring about massive and high impact for the benefit of the marginalized, poor families.

Recently in many of her sorties, especially as she monitors prices of commodities, Pres. Gloria Arroyo said her government is seeing to it that no one will be deprived of basic food stuffs and commodities especially during the period of El Nino. (PIA6/ESS) [top]
