500 Davao students avail of scholarship grant

By Christy Carole Sanico

Davao City (31 March) -- 500 students from Davao City avail the Scholarship on Tertiary Education Program (STEP).

STEP budgets 25,000Php per semester for every scholar. Each student receives 1,000Php allowance per month, 1,500Php for school uniforms and 1,000Php for textbooks exclusive of tuition fees.

To qualify as a STEP scholar, the applicant must belong to top 10 graduates of public secondary or private schools in Davao City, submit certificate of indigency to be issued by the CSSDO and certificate of residency signed by the Barangay Captain, and pass Psychiatric Evaluation Test. Qualified students must only enroll in schools within Davao City.

"There is still hope for academically challenged but determined students, they can avail Scholarship on Tertiary Education Program Financial Assistance (STEPFA).'', stated Eric Antioquia, STEP's Technical Head Assistant.

STEPFA scholars receive 7,500Php per semester.

"We started STPE in 2008. We visit schools and inform students about the program. But today, we have scholarship administrators in every school for easier access to interested students," Antioquia added.

On April 22, 2010, STEP scholars will hold tree planting activity at Magsaysay Park to celebrate Earth Day. (PIA XI) [top]
