Big prizes await river clean-up winners

Lingayen, Pangasinan (31 March) -- Preparations are under way for the second "Ilog Ko, Bilayen Tan Aroen Ko" environmental advocacy campaign that highlights this year's Pistay Dayat (sea festival) celebration.

The theme, "Malinis ya Kailogan…Bilay na Karaklan," aims to create people's awareness and drum up support on the importance of the river systems being the source of livelihood and mode of transportation of the majority of Pangasinan farmers and fisher folks.

The program endeavors to institutionalize the massive and sustained clean-up drive and rehabilitation of the rivers and tributaries to preserve their pristine beauty and biodiversity.

A fluvial float parade dubbed "Banca Parada" along the Agno River traversing the municipalities of Bugallon and Lingayen will be the main attraction, organizers said.

On-the-spot painting and essay writing contests will also be held.

The activities will culminate with the awarding of the PAKAR Awards to the cleanest rivers and river banks.

Cash awards and environmental protection-related projects worth P1 Million and P500,000 for the municipal and barangay categories await the winners. (PIO/PIA Pangasinan) [top]
