PIA Press Release

April 9 is holiday: second of 2010 long week-ends

Manila (31 March) -- This Friday, April 9, the country commemorates Araw ng Kagitingan and marks the country's second long week-end in 2010.

The country's long weekend started last Friday as the Filipinos ponder on the passion of Christ on Good Friday; a regular holiday. It was also preceeded by another regular holiday, Maundy Thursday.

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo approved half a day of work Wednesday for government workers to allow them travel time to go home and prepare for the Holy Week Activities.

Last Saturday, PGMA also declared through Proclamation Number 2029 series of 2010 a special non-working holiday for Black Saturday.

Saturday fell between the traditional holidays Good Friday and Easter Sunday, which have been declared holidays in the past.

On April 9, workers again take a reprieve as the country commemorates the patriotism, valor and heroism of Filipinos who stood and founght for freedom and democracy along with American compatriots during the Second World War.

Over these holidays, Labor Secretary Marianito Roque has issued pay rules for the designated days.

For the regular holidays on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday as well as the Araw ng Kagitingan, an employee who works is entitled to 200% of his regular daily wage and an additional 30% of his hourly rate for the day for work over 8 hours.

For the special non-working day on April 3, 2010 (Black Saturday), an employee is entitled to 130 percent of his or her daily rate for the first eight hours, and to an additional 30 percent of his or her hourly rate on the said day for work performed in excess of eight hours. (PIA-Bohol) [top]
