4 Abra firms avail of manufacturing productivity extension program

by Maritess Benas

Bangued, Abra (1 May) -- Four manufacturers in the province have initially availed of the Manufacturing Productivity Extension (MPEX) Program of the Department of Science and Technology(DOST).

Menandro Buenafe of the DOST-Abra named the four local manufacturers as Carlo's Furnishing in Tayum, Lexan Delicacies in Bangued, Talledo's Miki Commercial in Dolores, and the A & C Enterprise in Bangued.

Buenafe said the MPEX program is a capability building measure for export industry modernization of the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the manufacturing sector to attain and sustain a higher level of productivity.

The MPEX program is funded by the Technology Application and Promotional Institute (TAPI) and the Small Enterprises Technology Upgrading Program (SET-UP). It is implemented by the Covenant Consultants International of Makati City as consultants.

The MPEX program in Abra started this April and will last for three months. The Consultants will provide technical assistance to the manufacturers in order to attain higher productivity through improvements in the overall operation of the firm and help the firms win in the market place and generate more jobs in the grassroots level as well as the utilization of available raw materials.

Industrial engineers and experts in the field of manufacturing are fielded to the firm-beneficiaries to address the various productivity concerns like capacity utilization, wastage levels, product design and packaging, plant layout, production planning and control, systems in materials management, quality control assurance, safety and housekeeping practices and facilities, financial systems and control, human resource utilization, work organization, manufacturing system, process and operations, machine and equipment utilization, plant maintenance, cleaner production technologies, energy audit and food safety.
