Philrice-Batac continues to assist Abra farmers

Tayum, Abra (1 May) -- PhiRice-Batac continues to provide high yielding variety of palay and technical assistance to the farmers of Abra for more productivity.
The program dubbed' Location Specific Technology Development (LSTD)' establishes the baseline data regarding the riceland before infusing any technology that will be recommended to the farmers for implementation.
After six months of farm demonstrations in the municipalities of San Juan, Tayum and Lagangilang, 300 farmers gathered together during a grand field day at the project site in Tayum last week to show how the technology helped the farmers yield almost a ton of palay per hectare.
Ms. Alma Aguinaldo of PhilRice Batac reported that during the six months cultivation period, the farmers were given different varieties of seeds for planting and fertilizers appropriate to the type of soil cultivated. The farmers observed how each variety performed in terms of their capacity to yield.
During the field day, authorities in the agriculture sector expressed their continuing support to the agriculture program for the benefit of the farmers. Tayum Municipal Agriculture Officer Domingo Balneg stressed on the farmers the importance of religiously following the technology recommended by the technicians coupled with proper care and management of their crops.
Department of Agriculture-CAR Assistant Regional Director Josie Aben assured their all-out support to the farmers and emphasized the need to subject their lands to soil analysis to determine the appropriate fertilizer to be applied.
In support of the said program, Tayum Mayor Glenn Eduarte expressed appreciation to the PhilRice Program and vowed to support the farmers until they become self-sufficient.
The farmers were so thankful for the opportunity to learn from the LSTD program of the PhilRice as they realize hope for greater productivity and increased income as evident in the increase of yields with the use of the seeds provided by the PhilRice. (PIA-Abra) [top]
