TESDA conducts regional masonry competition

Baguio City (1 May) -- A mason from Ifugao topped the 2010 "Galing Mason" Regional Competition held in Kalinga last April 27-28, sponsored by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA-CAR), in partnership with HOLCIM, and in coordination with Philippine Construction Association Inc and Association of Construction and Informal Workers.

Dennis Dinamman of Lagawe, Ifugao bagged the top prize of P7,500.00 and will represent the region in the national competition.

Second place winner is Cresencio Galvan Jr. of Marcos Highway, Baguio City and third place went to Mhelfredwin Rasay of Luna, Apayao with cash prize of P5,000 and P3,000 respectively.

The masonry competition involved preparation of tools, equipment, materials and personal protective equipment, CHB Laying & Preparation of Surface, Installation of Guide String & Application of Mortar, Finishing of Plastered Wall, Preparation of Wall Footing, Mixing & Pouring of Concrete, Finishing of Poured Concrete and Application of 5-S (Good Housekeeping) in the Workplace.

According to TESDA Regional Director Cenon Querubin, the competition which is being held yearly, aims to actively promote blue collar skills and its significant contribution to national development, by pursuing global competitiveness for our skilled masons.

For this year's competition, there were 26 masons who joined: two from Ifugao, 12 from Kalinga, Apayao and Benguet with three each, Mt Province, five and Baguio City with one. The competition was held at the Gawad Kalinga Project, Agbannawag and TESDA Provincial Training Center in Bulanao, Tabuk, Kalinga.

Holcim provided competition allowance, actual transportation subsidy, meals subsidy and Galing Mason Skills Competition T-shirt for the competitors, as well as the cement for competition and cash prize for the winners. (PIA) [top]
