DOTC tells jeepney drivers to give discounts

Baguio City (1 May) -- The Department of Transportation and Communication(DOTC) ordered drivers to give discounts to people with disabilities, senior citizens and students.
DOTC Regional Director Federico Mandapat said jeepney drivers should follow the law and give 20 percent discounts to the fare of PWDs, senior citizens and students in the city.
There are several reports that jeepney drivers are not giving fare discounts to these people especially to students on Saturdays and Sundays even when there are classes.
Mandapat said drivers are obligated to give discounts to students even on week ends because they are still having classes or activities in their schools. Students attending summer classes should also be given discounts by drivers.
Mandapat urged passengers to be vigilant and ask for their discounts from the jeepney drivers.
If drivers will not give discounts, passengers should take note of the plate number and the route of the vehicle, remember when and where it happened and report it to the DOTC office at the second floor of the Post Office, said Mandapat.
Operators and drivers are liable for not giving discounts. Any driver apprehended for not giving discount will be fined from P1,000 to P1,500.
Many students complain of Aurora Hill and Trancoville jeepney drivers, who are plying the university belt of the city, of not giving discounts. (PIA) [top]
