Western Visayas vendor wins in DOLE Kabuhayan Awards
Iloilo City (4 May) -- An ice water and halo-halo vendor from Western Visayas was among the top winners of the recently concluded Kabuhayan Awards of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).
Ma. Zeny Belen of Isabela, Negros Occidental who was declared winner in the Sikap Kabuhayan category of the awards received her Kabuhayan certificates worth P150,000 from President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo during the awarding ceremony held at the SMX Convention Center in the Mall of Asia as part of the Labor Day celebration last May 1.
DOLE 6 Director Aida M. Estabillo said Belen who now owns a carinderia from the P5,000 financial assistance from DOLE also took home an additional P20,000 as a regional winner.
Belen bested two other outstanding individual worktrepreneurs in the said category of the national search. They are Margarita Dagooc of Region 8 and Cerila Cuadrillero of CARAGA.
Kabuhayan Awards intends to recognize and showcase the best DOLE-assisted livelihood projects that were implemented during the last five years for priority groups of beneficiaries.
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said during her keynote speech that the granting of awards and grants to the labor sector aims to improve the sector?s economic capability through augmentation, livelihood, and further skills training, according to a Malacanang report.
"The checks we gave out for outstanding workers enterprise is just one of the things we have done so that the laid off workers, here and abroad, will find gainful employment and income right here," the President said. (PIA) [top]
