PIA Press Release

Catbalogan joins 4Ps program

By Ninfa B Quirante

Catbalogan City (4 May) -- After a series of processes, now it can be told that Catbalogan City is now included in the Pantawid Pamilyang Piipino Program (4Ps).

This means that some 1, 500 poor Catbaloganons will be eligible to receive the conditional cash grants being enjoyed by all 24 municipalities of Samar and the city of Calbayog.

In the 4Ps press conference held at PIA ?Catbalogan, Samar office this morning, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Regional Director Letecia Corillo announced the good news.

However, the number of beneficiaries will be only 1,500.

Catbalogan City belongs to Set 3 areas along with other municipalities in Leyte with a relatively few number of beneficiaries.

"The 4Ps project aims to decrease poverty situation and increase income," Corillo added.

As Samar municipalities have enjoyed the cash grant from 4Ps since 2008; the panellists were asked how much of poverty has decreased.

As of this time, the DSWD said it cannot gauge yet its success in Samar but mentioned N Samar which implemented 4Ps earlier.

Ms Emily Grande of the Department of Health (DOH) said that malnutrition in N Samar has decreased from 26% in 2008 to 23% in 2009.

Dir Corillo added that enrolment in the schools are better.

Presently, 4Ps beneficiaries are assured of funding for five years.

The program serves to combat poverty in the families through a provision of conditional income support to poor households with children 0-14 years of age, so that improved health and education among children can be achieved.

A maximum of P 1,400.00 a month is given to families with three qualified children. (PIA-Samar) [top]
