AFP, PNP, Church, children pay tribute to workers in Davao
Camp Apolinario, Panacan, Davao City (5 May) -- The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Philippine National Police (PNP) together with Barangay officials, religious groups and children paid tribute to workers in Davao in celebration of Labor Day.
In commemoration of the International Labor Day, the 10th Infantry Division (10ID) in partnership with the Davao Police Regional Office 11, Barangay Council of Sasa and Joseph the Worker Parish dedicated a night-long concert for workers held at Davao City's old airport Saturday.
The concert reached its climax when soldiers accompanied by children of workers walking in candle-lit night brought flowers dedicated for their worker-parents.
"This is our simple way of thanking our dedicated workers who are the lifeblood of our economy. This is a salute to them as we recognize their contribution to our country. It is through the sweat from their forehead and the strength of their steady hands that the country's economy continues to grind." said Maj. Gen. Carlos Holganza, commander of 10ID.
More than 1000 workers from different companies in Davao City graced the concert dubbed as "Lingaw, Lipay, Halad Alang sa mga Trabahador" Enjoyment, Happiness, Dedicated for our Workers.
Workers and residents who watched the concert were in awe and were thankful saying they were very happy for the recognition they received from different sectors and organizations involved.
Davao region is home to millions of workers engaged in different industries. Banana plantations abound nearly the whole region specially Davao del Norte, mining is the main economic activity in the gold-rich province of Compostela Valley, fishing is a common livelihood in Davao del Sur and fruit bearing trees flourish, quality rice comes from the ricefields of Banay-banay town in Davao Oriental and copra fuels the economy of the whole province.
