Comelec recalls 5,500 PCOS memory cards from Eastern Visayas
Tacloban City (May 5) -- The memory cards of some 5,500 Precint Count Optical Scan (PCOS) machines will be sent back to the Comelec Central Office in Manila today, in order to correct the faulty configuration, Comelec 8 Director Nick Mendros informed the Philippine Information Agency.
It is not the PCOS machines which will be sent back, the acting Regional Director stressed correcting earlier local news stating that the PCOS machines from EV are being recalled.
Director Mendros explained that the Comelec Central Office has ordered the recall of the PCOS memory cards after the "testing and filling" done in Manila and in Batangas showed glitches in the voting tally machine.
Director Mendros, when interviewed by the PIA was at the PCOS hub, removing the memory cards in the PCOS machines, with the members of the PPCRV and the Philippine National Police.
"We have started the removal of the memory cards yesterday until 2:00 o?clock in the morning. Then we started again at 7:00 o?clock this morning," Director Mendros said.
The memory cards will be sent to Manila today via air transport, Director Mendros disclosed. He expects the memory cards to be sent back to Region 8 after correcting the wrong configuration on the local candidates? portion. He said that instead of the single line which was used for the National candidates, the local candidates? portion was double spaced.
The Comelec Regional Office will conduct a test and filling activity either on May 7 or May 8 or once the corrected memory cards arrive in the Region, Director Mendros added.
When the order from the Comelec Central Office arrived on May 4, the Comelec Region 8 some 1,800 PCOS machines are already on the way to the provinces of Northern Samar, Samar and Biliran. Immediately, the delivery trucks were directed to return to the PCOS hub in Tacloban, Director Mendros said.
Director Mendros called on the people of Region 8 not to panic. It is good that the problem was detected before the conduct of the May 10 elections, he added. (PIA 8) [top]
