DA-XI to award farmers with "unusually huge-sized" crops

Davao City (6 May) -- The Department of Agriculture XI is urging all farmers in the region to bring in their 'biggest' crops produce on the third week of May in celebration of the Farmers and Fisherfolks' Month.

Dr. Alfredo Cayabyab, DA's Research Division chief, disclosed that farmers who could produce and present any vegetable or fruit crops in unusually huge sizes would be awarded most outstanding.

This activity dubbed as "Palakihan" is one highlight of the month-long festivities spearheaded by DA in observance of the farmers and fisherfolks' month which officially opened on Tuesday (May 4, 2010).

"We are inviting all fisherfolks, farmers and interested individuals to celebrate with us and avail of our free lectures on different agricultural topics," said Cayabyab.

"We salute the farmers. They deserve to be honored for they contribute to food security? this celebration is for them? we want to update them on how to use modern [agricultural] technologies as weapon against climate change," Cayabyab stressed.

Cayabyab disclosed that part of the celebration is the conduct of series of free lectures that would be held at the DA-RFU XI Office, at Bangoy St., Davao City.

Yesterday, the lecture was on Corn and Cassava Production. After the lecture, the participants were given free hybrid seeds, microbial fertilizers and leaflets on corn production techno guides.

Today's highlights are film showing on climate change and lecture on vermin culture and vegetable production. Subsequently, vegetable seeds dispersal and distribution of planting materials would take place.

DA would also hold the following lectures with corresponding schedules: May 12, Skills Training on Butchering; May 13, Meat Processing; May 17, Indigenous Vegetable Production; May 18, Passion Fruit Production and Marketing; May 19, Rubber Technology updates and Coffee Production; May 20, Abaca Production and Marketing, Goats Milk Processing Technology and Cardaba Processing and Marketing and; May 24, Durian Products Processing, Coco Sugar, Bangus Deboning and Guso Salad Preparation.

This event which banners the theme: "Magsasaka at Mangingisda Sama-samang Harapin ang Hamon ng Climate Change Gamit ang Makabagong Teknolohiya," is participated by the National Food Authority (NFA), Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), and National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) which are also under the DA.

Furthermore, DA invites interested groups and individuals to showcase their farm produce in the exhibit booths and stalls installed at the premises of the regional office of DA.

The following groups have participated in the exhibit: Pag-asa Organic Fertilizers, Food Processors Association of Davao, Goat Industry Dev't. Council (GIDC), B-Meg/San Miguel Foods Corp., NFA, Movement for the Advancement of Sustainable Agriculture, Vegetable Industry Council of Southern Mindanao Inc., Tilson Trade and Pioneer Brand Seed Corn.
