DA gives certified seeds to Kabankalan farmers

Negros Occidental (6 May) -- The Ginintuang Masaganang Ani (GMA) of the Department of Agriculture subsidized the certified seeds given to farmers in Kabankalan City through the Office of the City Agriculturist.

The distribution was graced by Negros Occidental Governor Isidro Zayco, Kabankalan Mayor Pedro Zayco, City Agriculturist Dr. Nemesio Caņete and other local officials.

Caņete said the certified seeds can help farmers to maximize their yield by 20 to 30 percent increase compared to home grown seeds.

This project is part of the five-point development agenda of the city under its food security and livelihood support.

Kabankalan City has a land area of 68,963 hectares with 20 percent devoted to rice production.

The rice seed subsidy is implemented by the Kabankalan City Agriculture Office while the national government through the Department of Agriculture subsidized 50 percent of the cost and the farmers pay for the remaining 50 percent.

Each qualified farmer can avail of one bag per one hectare area of rice fields. The crop technician shall then monitor the project in each barangay and to provide technical assistance to ensure the yield increase.

The project is also to increase the supply of rice in the local market.

According to Deputy Presidential Spokesman Gary Olivar, palay yields under the Arroyo administration averaged 3.54 MT per hectare compared to 2.97 MT under Ramos and 2.92 MT under the Estrada administration. (PIA/EAD) [top]
