DOH celebrates 'Safe Motherhood Week 2010'

By Jennifer P. Gaitano

Butuan City (6 May) -- The Department of Health (DOH) Caraga celebrates this year's Safe Motherhood Week thru a launching of Essential Newborn Care Protocol and Postpartum Contraception with the theme: "Buhay ni Nanay at ni Baby pangalagaan? Manganak lamang sa health facility," recently held in one of the local convention centers here.

About 500 stakeholders composed of pregnant women of different barangays, representatives from the regional line agencies, local government units, barangay health workers, midwives, and guests attended the event.

The activity started with lively chants and cheers by various delegates in Caraga region while the launching of Essential Newborn Care Protocol and Postpartum Contraception was formally opened by DOH Sec. Esperanza Cabral, DOH Usec. Dave Lozada Jr., and DOH-Caraga Regional Dir. Leonita Gorgolon.

In her short speech, Sec. Cabral emphasizes the roles and responsibilities of the parents especially the mothers to their children and family.

"Parents should not be dependent on what the government can provide but also it is our responsibility as parents to our children to provide them proper care, nourishment, and education," Sec. Cabral said.

Also, in an interview with a pregnant woman - Ms. Analiza Villar, as one of the participants, said that she is determined to have her 3rd child's birth at the hospital, believing that her health is at risk if she will settle for less.

Ms. Villar also said that DOH's initiatives in assuring pregnant women's helath thru various orientations on pre-natal care, Newborn care, breastfeeding, and post partum contraception to the barangays contributed so much help to them.

Meanwhile, the distribution of Buntis Kits to pregnant women and some giveaways to guests was conducted right after the citation of the Pledge of Commitment for Maternal Newborn Child Health and Nutrition by the participants.

With this celebration, DOH is optimistic that pregnant women will be more conscious of their health and will only give birth at the health facility. (PIA-Caraga) [top]
