Election-related killing noted in Davao Sur town

By Mai Gevera

Davao City (10 May) -- Two are declared dead, and one severely injured after an encounter happened Sunday midnight (May 9) in Barangay Bulacan, Malalag, Davao del Sur.

Davao del Sur provincial director Senior Superintendent Ronald de la Rosa said that the encounter involved men of Malalag mayoralty candidate Givel Mamaril and incumbent mayor Roel Paras.

Recovered in the incident site are three motorcycles, one baby armalite with fully loaded 20 rounds magazine, one caliber.45, one home-made caliber.38 revolver.

Authorities continue to investigate this case as one supporter of Paras, Eduardo Ambaik, is now under the custody of the Provincial and Detective Management Section.

Meanwhile, Malalag police station chief Elmer Cabuslay was axed from office after the incident.

At the moment, election-related crimes in Davao del Sur has reached 16 cases, a record from the Joint Security Coordinating Center.

The Municipality of Malalag is now an election watchlist area along with the towns of Kiblawan and Magsaysay.

The province of Davao del Sur and Davao City was recently placed under Comelec control after the series of incidents that happened months before elections.

The declaration formed part of the Comelec Resolution No. 8887 putting under its control the following: Nueva Ecija in Central Luzon; Abra in Cordillera Administrative Region; Buguey, Cagayan in Cagayan Valley; Davao City and Davao del Sur in Davao Region; Dasol, Pangasinan in Ilocos Region; Pantao, Ragat, and Matungao of Lanao del Norte in Northern Mindanao; and the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (Armm).
