Voting beyond closing time possible

By Mai Gevera

Davao City (10 May) -- Election officers in Maa Elementary School expect an extension of voting until late in the evening after the initial turn-out of voters as of 9 in the morning.

In one precinct, there were only 80 voters accommodated as of 9 am. Twenty voters stay in the holding area while the rest line up outside the polling precinct.

An election officer said that feeding the ballot is not much of a problem but the vote casting eats much of the time.

Comelec official Atty. Danilo Cullo said in a radio interview that the Comelec could allow extended voting as long as voters are within 30 meters from the polling precinct by 6 in the evening.

"We will accommodate them as they are within the vicinity even by closing time at 6," he said.

Common complaint of voters is the long line with expected 1,000 voters per precinct.

Some voters also had a hard time looking for their precinct room now that there are already clustered precincts, lesser rooms than the previous elections.

Cullo asked voters a little of their patience as they were waiting for their time to cast their vote. (PIA XI) [top]
