AFP: Comelec control not a cause of panic

By Mai Gevera

Davao City (10 May) -- Commanding general of the 10ID Carlos Holganza assured Davao residents that placing the city under Comelec control should not be the cause of panic.

In a live interview on Hatol ng Bayan Autovote 2010, Holganza told the public to expect more visibility of soldiers as the Davao City and Davao del Sur Province are placed under Comelec control.

Placing Davao City under the Comelec control stemmed from the petitions of Speaker Prospero Nograles and former City Administrator Wendel Avisado, said Comelec Regional Election Director Ray Sumalipao.

The declaration formed part of the Comelec Resolution No. 8887 putting under its control the following: Nueva Ecija in Central Luzon; Abra in Cordillera Administrative Region; Buguey, Cagayan in Cagayan Valley; Davao City and Davao del Sur in Davao Region; Dasol, Pangasinan in Ilocos Region; Pantao, Ragat, and Matungao of Lanao del Norte in Northern Mindanao; and the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (Armm).

Holganza reported no untoward incidents so far since precincts opened at seven in the morning. "There's nothing much report we received except the long lines outside the precincts," he said. However, he asked the voters to be more patient in waiting for their time to cast vote. Problems like this, he said, is but expected especially that it is the first for the country to hold an automated election. (PIA XI) [top]
