Comelec: 10% of PCOS machines in Davao region malfunctioned

by Mai Gevera

Davao City (10 May) -- Commission on Election regional director Rey Somalipao confirmed that less than 10 percent of the PCOS machines in the region conked out.

With 3,431 PCOS machines distributed region-wide, about 300 of which did not function during the start of election this morning.

Common cause is the battery load that leads to the conking of machines.

In Davao City, Smartmatic confirmed that they replaced five PCOS machines as of 1pm.

Somalipao admitted that there could be possible irregularities with the malfunctioned machines especially that the BEIs are allowed to insert the ballots of those voters in other machine.

Also in Mati City

In Mati City, 2 PCOS machines had malfunctioned in two separate polling places in this city. In Barangay Macambol, one of the PCOS machines in Macambol Elementary School polling station had stopped operation in the first hour of voting. Election officer Manligoy said that voting had proceeded even without the machine or a replacement. Macambol is one of the most remote barangays in the city.

In Matiao Elementary School where the biggest number of voters in a precinct is locates had one of its PCOS malfunctioned bby rejecting ballots. But Comelec clarified that it already replaced the said machine. (PIA XI/Erwin Fernandez) [top]
