Davao to proclaim winners today

By Mai Gevera

Davao City (11 May) -- City election officer Danilo Cullo said that the Board of Canvassers decided to ask the Commission on Election Manila to allow them to proclaim the new set of winners in the city despite the lack of transmitted election results from farflung areas. They target to proclaim the winners this afternoon.

He cited distance and lack of transportation as the major cause of the transmission delay as well as the absence of communication signal that should have brought in election results fast from polling precincts.

There are eight areas in the city, mostly in the hinterlands, which have yet to transmit election results.

Initial result of canvassing showed the lead of incumbent vice mayor Sarah Duterte against her tough opponent House Speaker Prospero Nograles.

Comelec has also declared a relatively peaceful election especially that there are no reported election-related incident since the city was placed under the control of the Comelec.

He said that the order placing the city under Comelec control will take effect during the entire election period, that would be until June 10. However, he said that they may request for an early termination of such order. (PIA XI) [top]
