Tagum City (11 May) -- Five got killed Tuesday (May 11) in an ambush in Barangay Mahayahay of Compostela Valley a day after the national and local elections.
Col. Romeo Caliso, commander of the 1001st Infantry Brigade of the Philippine Army in an interview said one of the victims was a poll watcher while two were members of the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU) and two soldiers.
The fight leading to death of the victims took place in Sitio Mangga at 10:00 a.m. while a military team was securing the retrieval of election paraphernalia from Barangay Mahayahay.
Caliso blamed the New People?s Army (NPA) for such atrocity as no group can do such kind of act using high powered firearms, he said.
Caliso explained that the poll watcher got caught in the crossfire because the victim was with the military elements who were on foot patrol while on a mission to secure members of the board of election inspectors (BEIs).
But he made it clear that no BEI member was among the casualty but there were 3 other poll watchers who got wounded together with nine soldiers.
Maragusan is one of the seven identified election watch-list areas (EWAS) in Compostela Valley Province. Other areas are Laak, Compostela, New Bataan, Maragusan, Monkayo, and Pantukan. (PIA XI) [top]
