Tanauan election results awaited to complete Leyte canvass

Tacloban City (May 13) -- Only the result of the municipal canvass of Tanauan is being awaited by the Leyte board of canvassers in order to complete the Leyte Provincial canvass.

This was learned by the Philippine Information Agency from the Comelec Provincial Office.

Tanauan has four precincts that have defective PCOS memory cards. These include a precinct at Barangay Canramos, one at Barangay Talalora, one at Barangay Santo Nino and another one at Barangay Balud.

The Leyte Provincial Comelec Office headed by Atty. Felicisimo Embalsado, however, disclosed that the corrected PCOS cards arrived this morning of May 13 and have been sent to Tanauan.

The results of the Tanauan canvass is expected to be received by the Leyte Board of Canvassers today, thus, the result of the Leyte canvassing is expected to be transmitted to the Comelec Manila also today.

During the May 10 elections, all the ballots in the four precincts in Tanauan were placed in sealed ballot boxes. The same will be fed to the PCOS machines as soon as the corrected PCOS cards have arrived.

Although the winners during the May 10 elections in Tanauan is already known as the number of votes in the four barangays will no longer affect the results, the winners have not been proclaimed because it is only the Comelec en banc could decide the issue.

Thus, the winning mayoralty candidate, Vice Mayor Agapito Pagayanan decided to wait for the replacements of the PCOS cards.

Unofficially, the other winning candidates in Tanauan are Catalina Kapunan as vice mayor and the eight councilors are incumbent councilors, Ernesto Varona, Jigs Perez, Felicito, Bernal, Atty. Mario Villero, Fausto Malate and Cora Fiel. The other two are Bernardita Gobenciong and Raul Tolibas who is the number one councilor.

This report is to allay the fears being aired by some sector that the result of canvass in Tanauan is deliberate because the losing mayoralty candidate Mark Gimenez is the brother in law of Comelec Commissioner Gregorio Larrazabal. (PIA 8) [top]
