Cagayan power firm launches LEAD project in Ifugao

by Ben Moses Ebreo

Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya (May 13) -- SN Aboitiz Power ?Magat Inc. (SNAP-Magat) recently launched on Thursday the Livelihood, Enterprise and Agro-forestry Development(LEAD) Project designed to increase the forest cover and provide livelihood opportunities for the province of Ifugao.

The LEAD project which will be implemented jointly by SNAP-Magat and the Inado Peoples Organization (IPO), an upstream community with 30 families in barangay Cababuyan in Hingyon, Ifugao also seeks to curb deforestation within the Ifugao watershed areas.

IPO, a non-government organization whose name means fertile ground is composed professionals and farmers with vast experience in doing microfinance and seedling production activities in Hingyon town.

Implemented during a 3-year period, the LEAD project involves the establishment of five nurseries of forest and agro-forest trees in five upland communities in the province.

It will also encourage the conversion of grasslands into forests through the planting of fruit-bearing and agro-forest trees that will provide livelihood for the villagers.

Establishment of shredding areas will also be done to manufacture vermicompost as an organic fertilizer for farmers. Vermicomposting is a process that uses earthworms to turn organic wastes into high quality compost.

"We strongly believe in grassroots initiatives because the residents of the community know best what needs to be done in their own community. It is our way of helping develop forest areas while providing livelihood opportunities to upstream communities," said lawyer Michael Hosillos, SNAP-Magat vice president for Corporate Services.
