by T. Villavert

Iloilo City (13 May) -- The Ilonggos will observe the27th Annual International AIDS Candlelight Memorial on May 16, a Sunday at 6:00 P.M. at the Efrain B. Trenas Boulevard, Tabucan, Mandurriao, this City.

DOH 6 Director Ariel I. Valencia said the International Candlelight Memorial will be observed region-wide.

"This is a collaborative effort of the Regional Multi-Sectoral Partnership for STI, HIV and AIDS Prevention and Control and Healthy Lifestyle Partnership, and would involve all sectors of society," Director Valencia said.

Valencia explained that aside from remembering those we lost to AIDS, the activity is also aimed to show support for those living with HIV and AIDS, educate the public about HIV and AIDS, and get the publicís involvement in the fight against this dreaded disease.

For her part Charity Perea, DOH 6 Regional STI Coordinator, said that featured activities during the candlelight memorial on Sunday are: short program, prayer, songs, testimonials, and the candle light ceremony.

Perea said that anyone can help by spreading the word in order to gain more public participation on the 27th anniversary of the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial.

The Regional STI Coordinator said that for Western Visayas, about ninety-one (91) People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) have been recorded from year 1994 to April 2010. Of the 91, around 27 died bringing to only 64 PLWHAs who are currently receiving health services from the government and NGOs.

Perea emphasized that the figure represents only for those who have come out into the open but believes that there may be more PLWHAs out there but are still afraid to come out. (PIA6) [top]
