Military takes part in cleaning up election mess

by Jean Duron Abangan

Davao City (15 May) -- Elements of the 1003rd and the 1001st Infantry Brigade of the Armed Forces of the Philippines are participating in the clean-up drive after the national and local elections as an extended service they rendered on May 10.

Col. Domingo Tutaan, deputy commander of the 1003rd Infantry Brigade said the brigade has issued an order to battalions to initiate a clean-up drive, getting rid of election posters in their area of responsibility.

"Di na kami kailangang utusan; dagdag tulong na lang po yan," he said in an interview.

The 1003rd IB covers the entire province of Davao del Norte and some parts of Compostela Valley province particularly the whole of Laak and areas in the west side of Monkayo, Montevista, Nabunturan and Mawab towns.

Tutaan said the 1003rd IB has asked its battalions?the 60th IB and the 3rd Special Force to properly dispose of election campaign posters and coordinate with local government units to carry out such drive.

"Of course, we want to do this in line with the local governments," he said.

On the other hand, 1001st IB commander Col. Romeo Caliso said his troops are linking with youth volunteers who have participated in the series of Youth Leadership Seminar that his brigade has been conducting in its AOR.

The 1001st IB covers the entire area of Davao Oriental and areas in Compostela Valley Provinces lying east side of the Philippine-Japan Friendship Highway going to Nabunturan.

Caliso said his troops are tapping the participants to this summer youth seminar in San Isidro of Davao Oriental and in Maco and Pantukan to join with the clean-up drive that the military is waging after the national and local elections.

Aside from cleaning up the mess after elections in coordination with LGUs, the military troops are also expected to take part in the Brigada Eskwela which will open on Monday.

Caliso said he has directed even Scout Ranger team under his brigade to actively involve with clean-up drive in preparation for the school opening next month. (PIA-XI) [top]
