AFP will not negotiate for release of abducted soldiers

By Mai Gevera

Davao City (15 May) -- Commanding General Carlos Holganza of the 10th Infantry Division is not open for any negotiation with the abductors of three army and a militiamen after it happened Wednesday in Barangay Sawangan, Mawab, Compostela Valley Province.

Instead, he bared plans of an intensive operation in the said area after the rebels ambushed some troopers days ago as they were on their way to the Municipal Canvassing Area.

It was last Tuesday (May 11) that five persons including a civilian poll watcher were killed and another 12 were wounded after a group of NPA rebels ambushed an army convoy escorting election officers.

The AFP identified Corporals Marcial Bawagan, Ariel Sumo, and Eduardo Alcala and one militiaman Victor Pitogo to have been abducted while they were attending a birthday party in Bawagan?s residence.

Reports also claimed that the cause of the abduction was the disappointment felt by the NPA members since most of their favored local and national candidates lost in the recent election. (PIA-XI) [top]
