8th ID leads Samar 'operation baklas'

Catbalogan City, Samar (May 17) -- The Philippine army' 8th Infantry Division elements led 'operation baklas' in Samar's capital city of Catbalogan and neighboring towns where 8th ID's battalion headquarters are located.

In a press release, Col Armand Rico, chief of the division's public affairs office, he said that right after the successful first ever automated election in the country the army's 8th ID immediately launched an operation to clean up the mess left by the election.

Campaign paraphernalia and posters that almost covered whole communities were peeled from trees, concrete fences and even buildings.

The 8ID's "Operation Baklas Poster" is the immediate response of the soldiers in Eastern Visayas to restore the image of our communities.

After serving their duties to assure honest, orderly and peaceful elections (HOPE), the army marched forward to serve for another "HOPE", but this time for healthy, orderly and pollution free environment.

Using their available time during a break from their hectic command activities and workloads, the campaign kicked-off Friday afternoon in the immediate vicinity of the Camp Lukban.

The whole 'clean up team' is said to be a battalion, composed of different personnel from different units to assure the fast restoration of the city's face.

The clean up continued and as it invited attention from the public, Barangay Mercedes' Brgy Chairman, Justito Uy led his constituents to assist when he saw soldiers cleaning up his barangay.

Major General Arthur Tabaquero, 8th ID's head highlighted the social responsibilities of the soldiers not only as warriors, but as true, responsible and environment lover Filipino citizens.

"The 8th ID will continue to support programs to assist different government and non-government agencies, particularly in security and nation-building," said General Tabaquero.

Operation "baklas" poster for HOPE was simultaneously conducted by the AFP down to its lowest units as part of the Army's Concern for Environment (ACE). (PIA-Samar with AFR/JGM/jby 8th ID) [top]
