Bandits burn 5 schools in Basilan
Isabela City, Basilan (17 May) -- Five (5) School buildings were put on fire by the lawless elements in separate barangays at Akbar Municipality in Basilan, the military reported.
On May 11, 2010, a group of unidentified fully armed men burned one (1) classroom of Sinangkapan Elementary School in Upper Sinangkapan. After an hour, the bandits moved towards Barangay Caddayan where they once again burned two (2) classrooms of Caddayan Elementary School and two (2) classrooms of Paguengan Elementary School at Barangay Paguengan in Akbar Municipality.
On the following day (May 12, 2010), at around 2 o'clock in the afternoon, another group of unidentified fully armed men burned again one (1) classroom of Mangalut Elementary School in Barangay Mangalut, Akbar.
The series of arson incident resulted to the total destruction of five (5) elementary schools in Akbar Municipality.
The Commander of 1st Marine Brigade, BGen Eugenio N Clemen AFP, immediately ordered hot pursuit operation against the perpetrators utilizing combined elements of Marine Battalion Landing Team?10, Marine Battalion Landing Team-9, and the 62nd Force Recon Company.
The operating troops were able to monitor the group's movement and withdrawal and eventually engaged them at about 9:58 AM at the vicinity of Barangay Caddayan, Akbar Municipality. The fire fight, which lasted for fifteen minutes, resulted to the death of Hadji Nawab Jainuddin and the wounding of several other bandits identified to be under the group of Hadjarun Jamiri, the father of losing mayoralty candidate Namad Jamiri and Rahma Jamiri.
The Marines, on the other hand, suffered two (2) wounded soldiers in action namely, Cpl Michael B Tamayo PN(M) and Pfc Rouel S Cabaltera. They were immediately brought to Camp Navarro General Hospital, Calarian in Zamboanga City for further medical treatment.
Since Election Day, the military and police in Basilan have been on full alert as the ASG/lawless elements have been staging terroristic acts in some areas of the Province.
Meanwhile, the Civil Military Operations of 1st Marine Brigade, Naval Construction Battalion and Civil Affairs Team-714 of JSOTF(P), have started assessing the damages to the school buildings and the estimate and scope of works to be undertaken to rebuild the school buildings before classes start on June.
