Military captures 15, kills 1 ASG in Basilan

Isabela City, Basilan (17 May) -- Operating troops from the Scout Rangers of the Philippine Army under 1st Marine Brigade successfully confiscated Six (6) high-powered firearms and captured fifteen (15) suspected lawless elements under Umar Ipong early morning of May 15, 2010 at vicinity of Sitio Bohe Pange, Barangay Giuong, Sumisip, Basilan.

Armed with an information that a certain Umar Ipong, one (1) of the suspected/ identified ASG together with his four (4) cohorts were staying at the vicinity Sitio Bohe Pange, Barangay Guiong, Sumisip, Basilan Province; operating troops from the Task Group Panther under 1st Marine Brigade, executed a raid at around 5:30 in the morning.

Firefight ensured which lasted for five minutes when the government forces encountered (16) armed men under Umar Ipong. The brief skirmish resulted to the death of one (1) armed man and the capture of 15 others.

The operating troops recovered One (1) M203 Grenade Launcher, Six (6) M16 Rifles, One (1) M1 Garand, One (1) ICOM transceivers, Two (2) Battery Packs of ICOM, One (1) Hand Grenade, One (1) Blasting Cap, One (1) Ammunition of 60MM Mortar, Three (3) pairs Combat Packs, Eight sets of Assorted Uniforms, Three (3) pairs of Combat Boots, Two (2) Cellular Phones, Bandoleer with magazines and ammunitions.

Umar Ipong has a standing warrant of arrest with Criminal Case Number 35371129, Criminal Case Number 36081164, Criminal Case Number 36111165 and Criminal Case Number 36741187 issued by Regional Trial Court of Basilan, 9th Judicial Region Branch 2, Isabela City for involvement in Kidnapping and Serious Illegal Detention and Atrocities during the Lamitan Siege.

Brigadier General Eugenio N Clemen AFP, Commander of 1st Marine Brigade revealed that the 15 armed men are now facing criminal charges for illegal possession of firearms as well as violation of the election gun ban and possession of explosives. (1st Marine Brigade/PIA9-BST) [top]
