El Niņo crop losses hit P12.11 billion
P122 million in Negros Occidental
Negros Occidental (17 May) -- As El Niņo phenomenon heats up, crop losses in the country reached P12.11 billion while Negros Occidental damage to crops was noted to reach P122,224,132 million affecting 6,634 hectares.
Usual losses are noted in rice and corn produce in the 29 cities and municipalities of the province.
The data from the National Disaster Coordinating Council Situationer Report as of May 7 revealed that the P12.11 billion damage surpassed the expected losses set by the Department of Agriculture at P11 billion.
According to the NDCC data, production losses in Western Visayas was placed at P1,350,585,782 covering 61,308 hectares in five provinces in the region.
So far in Negros Occidental, only the Municipality of Murcia and Himamaylan City declared a state of calamity.
Cloud seeding sorties in the province reached 151 since the operation started February 2010. The operation will continue with already 147 hours and 19 minutes of flying time recorded by the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist.
The El Niņo phenomenon is expected to continue until June 2010. (PIA/EAD) [top]
