Tuguegarao City (17 May) -- The National Statistics Office (NSO) is set to conduct the 2010 Census of Population and Housing (CPH) that includes the census of Indigenous Peoples in Cagayan Valley Region.
Regional Director Anabelle Langbayan said the census will be conducted in partnership with the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) to determine the ethnicity of every individual and to generate data that the government and its partners can use in developing and enhancing policies, programs and interventions for the IPs.
"Through the survey, it would be known if how many of the people are truly IPs and on IP group they belong", Langabayan said.
In Cagayan Valley Region, National Commission on Indigenous Peoples identified the ethnic groups in the region that includes the Agta, Ivatan, Ibatan, Ibanag, Itawes, Malaueg, Dumagat, Bugkalot, Kalanguya and others.
The NCIP, in coordination with NSO, already prepared a primer on the 2010 CPH for IPs. According to the said primer, the data that will be gathered through the census will help justify proposed IP programs, projects and activities especially in the field of education.
Langabayan added that through the CPH, more information can also be gathered on the ICCs/IPs? demographic, social, political, economic and cultural profiles/characteristics that would provide policy makers and planners a basis for rational and appropriate plans and programs for ICC/IP development.
