Search is on for 2010 most outstanding volunteers

Davao City (19 May) -- The Philippine National Volunteer Service Coordinating Agency (PNVSCA) has announced the onset of the search for most outstanding volunteer individuals and organizations for 2010.

Regional Director Ma. Lourdes D. Lim of the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) XI said that the search is open to "all individuals of Filipino citizenship and Filipino volunteer organizations or local chapter organizations of foreign volunteer organizations that currently provide volunteer assistance in the Philippines."

Lim said that the search aims to "highlight and recognize the exemplary performance and dedication to service of Filipino volunteers in building strong communities across the country through volunteerism."

She bared that there would be two awards to be conferred by December this year, namely: the National Outstanding Volunteers Award (NOVA) and the Volunteer Lifetime Achievement Award (VLAA).

The NOVA shall be awarded to outstanding individuals and organizations, Lim said.

For the individual category, she stated, a nominee must currently be "providing volunteer assistance consistently for at least three (3) years (youth category) and at least five (5) years (adult category) to socio-economic, civic and humanitarian programs or projects in institutions or communities."

At the time of submission of nomination, a NOVA nominee must be 15 to 30 years old (youth category) and at least 31 years old (adult category) and who is a member of a volunteer organization or institution that is registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Lim said that the affiliated organization of the individual nominee may also be registered by the PNVSCA or duly recognized by an accrediting government institution.

The individual may also be recognized as a volunteer by communities, groups or institutions which she/he serves, she stated.

For the organization category, the volunteer organizations are classified into non-profit and corporate.

According to Lim, a qualified organization must be "providing volunteer assistance consistently for at least five years (non-profit) and at least three years (corporate)."

The nominee organization must be "formally organized, with SEC registration and/or duly registered by the PNVSCA or granted accreditation by government or non-government organizations duly recognized by government; or is informally established but is recognized as a volunteer organization by communities, groups or institutions it serves.

Meanwhile, Lim said, the VLAA is conferred to an "individual Filipino volunteer or volunteer organization or a local chapter organization of a foreign volunteer organization serving in the Philippines."

She added that the nominees for this award must "have engaged in consistent volunteering activities for at least 25 years; attained national status and recognition in the field of volunteerism; a recipient of national and international recognition/awards.

A nominee must also meet these qualifications: "plays significant role/contribution in promoting volunteerism and possesses the capability to mobilize others to support volunteer causes and serves as a role model through a positive representation of volunteerism as a development resource.

Lim bared that "the regional qualifiers shall receive certificates of recognition," the national awardees "shall receive trophies," while the VLAA shall be awarded medals and certificates of recognition.

According to Lim, "the national awardees and recipients of VLAA based outside Metro Manila will be provided round-trip transportation and accommodation for their attendance in the awarding ceremony."

Finally, Lim informed that all nominations must be submitted to the SOV Regional Search Committees not later than August 12, 2010.
